Okamura Corporation

Digital experience design for “OFFICE KIT”, which supports the creation of the ideal office

Okamura Corporation comprehensively manages projects for the establishment, relocation and renovation of offices, and also makes proposals for the optimal “workplace” for each company.

They clarify the “ideal state” of the company, and are consistently responsible for the concept, space, design, construction and operational support that make this a reality.

However, the way companies work has gradually changed since the outbreak of the new coronavirus in 2020. The demands for offices have also changed.

TAM therefore implemented the entire process from the planning of the concept to the experience design of the new service “OFFICE KIT”.

In addition to the concept planning and design, we also created diagnostic content for the website and unique user experience-type downloadable materials.

Planning concept based on insight discovery

The request to TAM was to “create diagnostic content that proposes recommended offices”.

However, through persona design and user interviews, we discovered the user's insight. We found that what users were looking for was not “proposals from companies”, but rather the insight that “they wanted to consult with professionals after improving their own literacy”.

Therefore, we aimed to create a “pull-type” experience where users could obtain information themselves, rather than “push-type” content from Okamura.

Hands-on content “OFFICE KIT”

When we were thinking about how to express the concept on the website, we first started by imagining what it would be like if the website wasn't the point of contact with the user.

The ideal scenario was one in which employees could share ideas and opinions with each other while building an office using a kit that could be assembled like a plastic model.

The design motif is “kit (a collection of parts)”.
It expresses the user-pulled concepts of “being able to try it out” and “there being no fixed form”, as well as “the sense of anticipation that you might find your ideal office” and “the joy of creating it yourself”.

Diagnostic content that allows you to judge the results of your answers using a gradient

The logic design, which is important for diagnostic content, was algorithmized by TAM based on Okamura's knowledge. It incorporates original calculation logic.

What was important in this diagnosis was not to lead to just one result, but to express the trends and gradations of the results that appear depending on the user's choices.

By expressing the results of the diagnosis as a “distribution” among four results, we implicitly conveyed the possibility that other diagnosis results might be applicable, and through encouraging users to naturally explore the site, we aimed to create an experience where “the entrance is easy to understand, but you can investigate to the full extent”.

The concept of “a kit that can be assembled” was also expressed in the UI/UX design. We incorporated an animation that shows the parts gathering together as you select options.

In addition, users can view other diagnostic results in addition to the one result they are given, rather than just seeing a single result that is pre-determined.

The diagnostic results are based on Okamura's accumulated research results and knowledge and expertise, and are expressed in an easy-to-understand way, so the content allows users to actively acquire and learn information on their own.

Offline UX design “Downloadable materials with paper kit”

TAM was also in charge of the planning, design and design of the downloadable materials.

In addition to the materials for sharing the results of the diagnosis within the company, we also included a “paper kit” in the downloadable materials that people can actually assemble with their own hands, rather than just looking at.

The printed materials can be cut out with scissors and the parts can be combined to create your own office layout.

This is an idea for people to actually experience the image of the ideal office obtained from the results of the diagnosis.

“Creating a pull-type website like OFFICE KIT on the web was a first for our company. Normally, we solve problems related to our customers' work. We are confident in solving problems by looking at real office spaces and the people who work in them, but we needed to do a lot of studying to understand the needs of our customers, who are not visible to us, for creating offices. The team at TAM understood our thoughts, which we could not express well in words, and embodied them in the content.
With the eyes of a third-party professional, they objectively uncovered our strengths. I think that's because we had a lot of discussions with our internal team members, even though they were inexperienced, over several months in the early stages of the project, but I think we should have contacted you earlier.

This was a project that involved a lot of thinking about how to make office design more enjoyable.
Even office workers who use the office every day find it difficult to take the first step when it comes to actually designing the office.
Before long, time runs out and you finally manage to create a place to work.
Until now, you could only grasp the trick of creating an office after experiencing this kind of pain.
However, in this day and age, when you can create your own way of working, you need a service that allows you to create an office without pain and enjoy the process.
When creating this new service, TAM helped us to think about how to express it.
We hope to continue to develop more enjoyable content.

“I'd been involved in website page production before, but this was the first time I'd produced hands-on content, so I was a little worried about what the pages would be like. In that situation, TAM carefully proceeded with the project, checking our opinions from understanding customer insights to content production, so I was able to proceed with the project with a lot of peace of mind. Thanks to them, I think we were able to create content that is useful for our customers. I hope everyone will have fun creating their own office using OFFICE KIT!

We were able to work with everyone from Okamura's various departments to give form to the insight we gained from the user interviews, “I want to think about it myself first!”, and carry that through from the service name to the downloadable materials.
I myself really feel the potential of offices in my conversations with everyone at Okamura. Please use OFFICEKIT to think about your company's ideal office!

This has become a unique project that goes beyond the scope of web-based diagnostic content, and includes a set of paper kits that you can actually pick up and use.
We aimed for a design that is both academic, reflecting Okamura's research and findings, and also friendly and exciting.
We hope that you will have fun discussing your ideal office using the OFFICE KIT.

By proceeding with design and prototyping in parallel and visualizing the data analysis process that supports how the diagnostic results are generated, I feel that we were able to construct the optimal diagnostic logic.
The reason we adopted the coordinate plot method was to create a system that would allow us to grasp many possibilities without being restricted to a single conclusion by showing response trends visually and from multiple angles.
With “OFFICE KIT”, we feel that we have been able to create an experience that allows people to deeply consider their ideal office by evolving the diagnosis from “merely providing results” to “a tool that allows people to think actively and gain new insights”.
