Tokyo University of Science
Producing a Metaverse Event
that Fuses Virtual and Real-World Experiences
In anticipation of fiscal year 2023, Tokyo University of Science's Faculty of Science and Engineering is undergoing a transformative change—a departmental name change.
With the adoption of the new moniker, 'Faculty of Science and Technology' the department fully embraces the concept of creating new realms and values. This name alteration underscores the department's unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of modern science and engineering.
As one of the initiatives embodying the keyword 'frontier,' we organized a cross-disciplinary metaverse exchange event using VRChat. TAM, from metaverse world creation to discussions on how to exemplify the 'frontier' concept, provided support in bringing this event to life.
Live streaming of experiments in university research facilities, research presentations, and poster sessions within the virtual realm.
During President Ishikawa's opening remarks, the venue buzzed with excitement as an avatar identical to himself made a captivating appearance.
Real-world attendees at the venue used VR headsets to interact through avatars in the virtual space. We also facilitated public viewing from the real-world space.
Coordinating interfaces and environments
that bridge the real and virtual
While interpreting information and trends, we carefully selected the necessary equipment and resources from both real-world and virtual perspectives. We also designed the essential elements and content for communication and carried out announcements and promotions.
Arrangement of VR headsets, venue decorations (posters and banner stands), and the capture of 3D stereoscopic videos.
Creation of virtual spaces (worlds) that include 3D models and interactive elements, alongside announcements through Twitter posts, press releases, website development, and YouTube live streaming.
Collaborating with the VRChat community
to boost engagement
As of May 2022, unofficial estimates suggested that VRChat in Japan had attracted approximately 200,000 to 300,000 users. Many individuals, captivated by VR and the Metaverse, came together, sharing a vision of its flourishing.
For this event, we collaborated closely with the VRChat community. We worked together with community members to introduce various gimmicks and assets into the virtual space. Starting from the event creation phase, we nurtured excitement and engagement, which carried over to the day of the event.
We collaborated with the academic 'VRC Science Gathering' community ('VRC Rikei Shūkai') within VRChat, consisting of several hundred members, for research presentations. We also had the expertise of 'Ocutan-bot,' a VR/metaverse guide, who served as the event's emcee.
Creating opportunities
to explore the value and utility of the metaverse
This event inherently embodies the essence of the emerging 'Metaverse' realm.
Participants had the unique opportunity to personally experience and discover the advantages of sharing research experiments, surpassing traditional image and video formats. Moreover, the absence of physical appearances facilitated bias-free interactions, prompting participants to contemplate how they could apply these insights within their respective fields.
The development of creative content symbolizing the 'frontier' concept and the implementation of strategic communication design remain ongoing. TAM remains steadfast in our commitment to exploring the boundless potential of the metaverse in collaboration with the Tokyo University of Science, as we collectively pioneer new realms and values.
